Bruges · the Markt in 3D
West Flanders · the Belfry
Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium
The Markt is the old market square of Bruges, one of the richest cities in northern Europe in the 1300s. Its Belfry, begun around 1240 over the cloth hall, rises 83 m and leans about a metre to the east; a 47-bell carillon still plays from the top. When the sea channel silted up in the 1500s the money left, and the medieval town was preserved by poverty.
